Hopes that the UK can develop a green energy industry are under threat because school leavers are not interested in engineering

Energy giants including Centrica, National Grid, E.ON and EDF Energy are becoming increasingly "frustrated" that too few young people want to become engineers or scientists, which they say will stifle the UK's chances of capitalising on the growth of alternative energy sources, such as wind or solar power.

A survey of 2,000 A level and university students by Centrica, revealed that 55pc would not consider a career in science, technology or energy. Media and entertainment jobs were more desirable, the study showed.
