Centrica salutes ‘gas pioneer’ Bains http://www.energy-broker.co.uk/centrica-salutes-gas-pioneer-bains/

UK gas giant Centrica has paid tribute to “the father of the Morecambe Bay development” John Bains who died recently.

The parent of British Gas said the retired chief petrophysicist had embodied its own “pioneering spirit to extract and process gas from the East Irish Sea and North Sea”.

Bains first discovered gas reserves in Morecambe Bay off England’s north-west coast in 1972. At that time, the leaseholder concerned was searching for oil and was dismissive of the gas find, Centrica said in its Bains obituary.

“British Gas acquired the drilling rights for the region and, thanks to John’s tenacity and perseverance, an exploration well was drilled in 1974,” the UK player said.

“Eleven years later gas production started from one of the UK’s largest gas fields which, at its peak, met 12% of the UK’s gas supply.”
