ENERGY giants ScottishPower want to create 2500 jobs with a £5.2billion investment in their network. They want watchdogs Ofgem to give them the OK for an eight-year overhaul they say will improve services for 3.5million customers in central Scotland, Merseyside and north and mid-Wales.
From 2015, they would carry out inspection and maintenance work on 40,000 miles of underground cables, 25,000 miles of overhead lines and 30,000 substations.
Many of the cables and stations were built between the 1950s and 1970s and are approaching the end of service, the company said.
And there would be a focus on reinforcing power lines in rural areas to prevent power cuts caused by severe weather. If approved, it would be the largest investment by ScottishPower in their network.
About £90million would be spent on recruiting and training the 2500 people needed to make the upgrades.
