A string of recent gas and electricity price increases, coupled with the ongoing wintry weather means the average home will be hit with record-high charges of £550 for power in the first three months of 2013, according to the price-comparison service Energyhelpline.com.Spokesman Mark Todd said: “Energy customers were hit with 9 per cent, or £100, price rises in annual energy bills during the last price rise round.
“Now this freezing weather has turned up and it’s a shocking double whammy that will add a further burden to stretched household budgets.”
The recent unusually cold period, he added, is said to have added £44 to typical gas bills.
“If you thought the wintry weather was bad, wait till your energy bill arrives in April. Unless you have switched to a cheap deal it is very likely to send a further chill down your spine.”
