Wind generated a record 6004MW in the UK today, National Grid has confirmed. The average was notched between 2.30pm and 3pm and accounted for 13.5% of total electricity demand at the time. The previous record, set on 15 September, was 5739MW. This was broken several times today with wind regularly generating more than 13% of the total UK electricity demand to demonstrate a high consistency of supply.RenewableUK director of external affairs Jennifer Webber welcomed the milestone, saying: “Wind energy is consistently setting new records and providing an ever-increasing amount of clean electricity for British homes and businesses.“We’re generating from a homegrown source which gives us a secure supply of power at cost we can control.”A report by R-UK earlier this month revealed installed capacity in the UK topped 10GW this year on the back of record growth in the offshore sector.
