Energy Minister Greg Barker today hailed solar as having a “central role” to play in delivering clean energy for the UK but stressed that projects must be developed in a “sensitive” manner. His comments came as DECC launched The Solar PV Energy Roadmap, which spells out how Westminster will work with businesses and industry to build on the “unprecedented growth” that has been seen in the sector.
DECC said installed capacity in the UK has surged 25-fold since the end of 2010 and in his introduction to the document Barker states: “The DECC central forecast estimates that the UK is likely to reach 10GW by 2020 but I believe we can go faster and further.
“Along with many in the industry, I think that up to 20GW of deployed solar is not only desirable but also potentially achievable within a decade.”
The Roadmap confirms that new solar installations will need to be appropriately sited, give proper weight to environmental considerations such as landscape, heritage and local amenity, and allow communities “to influence decisions that affect them”.
DECC said: “The impacts of deployment on grid systems balancing, grid connectivity and financial incentives will also have to be considered.”
Barker (pictured), who is launching the document at Solar Energy UK 2013 at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, said: “The coalition is committed to delivering the clean and reliable energy supplies that the country needs at the lowest possible cost to consumers.
