Millions of families could face higher water bills under Government proposals to introduce compulsory meters in homes.

In an attempt to tackle a looming shortage, water companies across a third of the country will be asked to consider fitting properties in their areas with such a meter.

This means customers would be billed for every drop they use – rather than a fixed annual sum – which could see the cost of water double in some households.
